This is often misquoted as "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."
My version is authenticated (allowing for translation discrepancies) by the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (7th edition, 2009) and by Wikipedia.
The erroneous version seems to originate on the notoriously unreliable Brainy Quote. Well ... it's notorious with me.
